Game over on City Sq
Today the big T&G story was the apparent ‘grilling’ of City Sq developer Young Park. The whole thing is your typical don’t loose hope fluff, so much so that the actual lede of the story is buried way down deep where I’m sure it was missed by many.
Once tenants have been found, Mr. Park said, construction could get under way in about three years.
That should have been the headline right there. Sorry folks, it’s no secret how much I love this town and how big of a supporter of this project I’ve been; but we’ve been had. Three fucking years? That’ll put us in spring of 2011 for groundbreaking; at the very earliest. Fuck that noise, what we have here is some serious take to the streets bamboozling. It’s great to see that the council is appeased by that time line, but as residents we should be rolling Park and friends next time they’re in town. We have given away the keys to our downtown with no return on investment in sight and all we have to show for it is a fancy website. Shameful.

And in the meantime, the only new thing we are getting down there is a Kinko’s. There are fewer and fewer places to even grab lunch down there (I was looking today with my kids, and we ended up at the White Hen on the corner)!
3 years? ha thats nothing. i heard the end date for the “Arts district” to be complete was 30 years from now.
to bad too. there was optimism that the city sq project would help the arts district flourish sooner.
there are two things worcester needs to acquire to get it back on the right track:
1. a cheap but effective time machine
2. hundreds of billions of dollars that can be used to knock down almost all of the city and move out almost all of the people and replace it with a better city and replace them with better people
I have ten dollars and seventy three cents, what does that get me?
yah, I have to agree with Nice Kid..60% of the surrounding population of City Square is below the poverty level..city stat recently presented at Hotel Vernon meeting!
It is time to start inviting some folks to the city that have jobs and money in their pocket..not continuing to be such an attractive place for those that don’t:>)
I can’t blame Young Park for not going down the sewer pipe on this one…that the city threw the dice on one project is the city’s fault NOT Young Park’s..since I first bought in this city in 1991..I have waited for the Mall & Med City to reinvigorate a depressed downtown - hasn’t happened
Hop on a bus and head to downtown Haverhill..one of the hippest downtowns in the state..head to Nashua, NH or Manchester, N.H…more happpening downtowns…I’ll throw in Davis Square since I am a Somerville homie….this city is always waiting for something to happen instead of making it happen Brendan!
The Problem lies on the other side of Park Avenue heading twards Rutland..I’ll let you decide which side:>) The Power base for to long let the Urban Core decline - it missed two major real estate cycles and again it is not prepared for a downturn
The Urban Core of Worcester has to start developing some young creative and assertive leaders who will also run for office..cause everything is local and this part of the city that everyone on the West Side says is out future can’t get it done without them!
The most upsetting part of the Ed Agustus residency issue was why is he investing in Dorchester and not in the Canal District? Why does he prefer to stay in Dorchester instead of coming home to Worcester? Same for the voting issue last year..those two cats want to have a say in Worcester politics yet they spend their time in Boston! If our leaders do not want to invest or live here how can we expect others to?
