77.6%

So a good friend who happens to catch all the things I miss in the daily T&G just shot me this nugget from yesterdays NYT wire.

White minority is likely by 2042
Census projections see speedup in switch to new proportions

Ethnic and racial minorities will comprise a majority of the nation’s population in a little more than a generation, according to new Census Bureau projections, a transformation that is occurring faster than was anticipated just a few years ago.

The census calculates that by 2042, Americans who identify themselves as Hispanic, black, Asian, American Indian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander will together outnumber non-Hispanic whites. Four years ago, officials had projected the shift would come in 2050.

The story itself is forgettable, scaring the ‘native’ population has been a pastime in the US since a few hundred thousand of my closest relatives piled onto a boat off the coast of Ireland and started sailing West. What is absolutely amazing yet totally predictable is the 64 (and counting) comments.
My favorite and one of the erliest in the thread:

I got news for you we don’t have to wait untill 2042. We whites are already the Minority , all you have to do is drive through downtown Worcester or any large town in America. Either that or just look at the Court records . We need to start enforcing deportation laws NOW.
-In Auburn

OK, I don’t have time to personally educate every mildly retarded, white trash buffoon who thinks the Worcester suburbs are some sort of cultural high water mark. So if any of you happen to cross paths with one of these douche bags can you please inform them that Worcester is 77.6% white according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 2006 American Community Survey. So if you have a problem with anything in Worcester, blame 77.6% of it on Whitey and the rest on District 2 City Councilor Phil Palmeri.
Thank You.

Damn brother, right on! If you want to know what the I.Q. of the suburbanites of our city is, just check any comments section of a Telegram story relating to crime or taxes. These knuckle-dragging simians would have us believe Worcester is going to hell because of illegal aliens and minorities instead of dilatante mayors and logically-challenged ex-public employees.
As an aside, have you ever seen Phil Palmieri and Pig Vomit (as played by Paul Giamatti) in the same room?

My favorite thing in the Telegram comments is how whenever someone with a Latino name commits any kind of crime there are all these people who come out of the woodwork yelling deportation.

Ummm, last I checked if your are born in Puerto Rico you have American citizenship.

So you’re saying that the 60% of names in the Court section that are Hispanic are all P.R.’s?
    Racist.

yah may get a wee bit more frustrated Buckpaxton if you laid your head down each night with your family in the urban core instead of on pillows on the west side..I think it is more frustration we see constantly on blogs…than moronism or folks just being plain douche bags…I have been prone to some postings here and there that I have regretted but it has been bourne from extreme frustration than anything evil.

If you really want to see a cultural change then move back to D4..get your child in a local urban school…get active in the school and perhaps you may assist in creating a culture within the local urban community that stresses the need for inclusion in a childs education and being part of the process:>)

We need more than blogahs in the urban core-we need more working up a sweat mate

It is a bit odd that the people who actually live in D4 are the ones who elect Haller (as opposed to any one of a dozen “community activists” who’d gladly take the seat) and Buck thinks he’d be doing them a service by removing her. Not sure if it’s Paternalism, a bizarre intra-city neo-Colonialism or just plain resistance to all that is different from the usual “surrender-first” attitude of so many bad neighborhoods that motivates Buck.
Thanks for the Herald link, Buck. I can’t decide if my estimate (8,000) is more or less than I expected. It’s about 5% of the entire pop., so probably 10-15% of the workforce, if they all lived in Worcester, which of course they don’t.

  7. Paulie on August 16th, 2008 2:14 pm

    Tom;

we elect her for a number of reasons.

    1. what have been our options? Lynne Simonds?

    2. she lives in the toughest part and I respect this

    3. it is an impossible job to do as one councilor-to many fn’ problems in the District..yet she does it fairly well (I have many beefs with my councilor..one being slow to respond but how can one respond to so much?? so I deal with it)…I give Barbara a lot of leeway cause she fights the fight..many at largers rarely enter D4 on a regular basis..Tim Murray did all the time and still does!

    4. She understands that we need social balance and that the middle class can not continue to survive in D4 unless we achieve some parity (small percentage of middle class right now)..you would be surprised at the stuff one hears from our populace who’s mission is to make a statement here and then move on:>) I have been told I am trying to gentrify the hood just cause I put flower pots out front on the sidewalk:>) You wanna talk about douche bags Buckpaxton

I disagree with Buckpaxton that Barbara Haller should be the promoter…I want someone in the trenches banging it out with all these non-profits, CDC’s & social service providers that would just as well see a ghetto continue to keep their jobs (few live in the District or for long)..I wish she could have swayed Start on the Street to stay but am happy it is close to me off Chandler..this whole vendor issue has been fun..I pretty much banged away to see how much fervor could be created..quite funny so many bright folks have banged away at it..such a chump issue to be quite honest..we have major problems in this ciy that have destroyed its urban vibrancy..to see so many on the vendor issue just shows how PC everyone has become..the city is afraid to tackle the real issues - Barbara many times is not..you hit on them a number of times Tom (Lincoln) not to be confused wih Tom (Buckley)! How many have actually even got a hot dog off of one of these stands lately??

    5. what have been our options? Lynne Simonds?

    6. I’d vote for Buckpaxton or someone within his generation anyday however most of this generation within Worcester do not live in the District nor do we have very many really involved other than as student projects (I hate being a subject for a Grad student who is next moving to Kenya to work for the Peace Corp)..I want someone who owns a house..pays a mortgage like I do..goes to work every day..eats and drinks in the District daily..knows the day in and day out of our struggles to keep good tenants in these three deckahs…maybe has a kid or two in the local urban schools like Chandler Elemenary…

  8. Paulie on August 16th, 2008 2:18 pm

I’ve said it a milllion and a half times..until our leadahs and young bright cats like Buckpaxton move back to D4…we have a tough road to hoe in this city that wants to create an urban vibrancy..vendor issues are just another step backwards in solving the real issues

  9. Tom (lincoln) on August 16th, 2008 3:31 pm

All well and good. I watched both of my parent’s families live/move out of the area during my childhood. A few holdover great-aunts stayed ’til “the end”. There is NOTHING wrong with the area that couldn’t be fixed by it’s own residents changing their behavior. A triple-decker in Burncoat is the same as a triple-decker in Main South, after all. Refusing to recognize this (under the misguided notion that to acknowledge the problems of an area is to stigmatize that area, which notion pollutes every conversation on the matter) is Worcester-dumb.

  10. Paulie on August 16th, 2008 4:22 pm

funny thing Tom (lincoln)..those that make the above 77.6% statement and there are many in this ciy and beyond generaly live in the 77.6% non-culture locations..cause when all is said and done..those are safer, cleaner, civil and the schoools are bettah than the 32.3% locations of culture….

safer, cleaner, civil and the schoools are bettah 9 out of 10 times beats out culture and if I had a famalia I would most likely make the same choice:>)

I’ll AGREE with Buckpaxton on this one..whitey is just as much to fault for the decline of Worcester as are those who refuse to change the way they live their lives

As a soon-to-be-minority White Man, let me say I already am sick and tired of being hassled by The Man.

  12. Tom (lincoln) on August 16th, 2008 9:43 pm

The obsession with “culture” (as if all white/American culture is nonexistent) is a large part of the problem. 30 years of targeted programs have failed, it’s about time for people to give up on the “Little Caracas” vision of Main South and start applying the same standards that apply in functioning neighborhoods. All the rest is feel-good window dressing.

  13. Paulie on August 17th, 2008 9:19 am

where ever I travel and it is quite often..ole Whitey seems to have and enjoy as much culture as anyone to be quite honest wih ya…anyway I am hosting a New Orleans style Jazz/Blues bash on August 31 at my place on Chandler…been practicing away on the jambalay and gumbo the past two weeks..seem to have the recipes down..this week I am experimenting with the crawfish aka lobstah entouffee…I’ll try to bring some white funk to D4:>)

  14. Paulie on August 17th, 2008 11:41 am

“(as if all white/American culture is nonexistent)”

    >>I am sure there is a good argument out there that ole Whitey America borrowed an awful lot from other cultures and then expanded on them to create something even more different-I just bet those Tennessee moon shinahs were really just trying to make a good Bordeaux when they created Jack Daniels…ole Whitey America aint all that bad..no lack of folks wanting to join us each year from elsewhere:>) We gotta being doing something okay once in awhile I reckon:>)

  15. Paulie on August 18th, 2008 8:33 am

Main South was interesting last evening..had Madison to May closed off to traffic..gangs of very youngs kids roamed the streets (30+ in a pack)

I am trying to reconcile this with the mentality after a World Series win and they have closed down Kenmore Square or similiar event in magnitude.

I feel very bad for those who live in Main South..I would find last nights behavior intolerable..it was a festival where few were drinking and there is just so much noise & disruption leaving it.

I have been at the New Orleans Jazz Festival the past two years…100K+ at each..and mucho drinking to..when they end each night..the crowd dispurses like a crowd should…I host monthly events with 1500+ and the same happens (all walks of life at each)

isn’t middle class America a developed culture

The point of the the story is the planting of the fear seed. Setting off an amount inertia for more hate and resentment to resonate, as a diversion to how we are all getting the big screw. It is not about race, it is about socio-economics. If you are poor like about 70% of Worcester population ( White black, tan, green whatever), your life is at risk of: A. Getting arrested and not having the proper legal support to challenge the court or police, B. Not having enough money to buy food for your family, C. Not having enough to pay rent and or gas for your car or even owning a car D. Not having money to pay for a doctors visit, E.Looking at crime as possible way out ( and it never is ), F. Living in a shit hole neighborhood with loud mouth asswipes keeping your family up all night while they drink their pain away or try to make a living selling crack. In other words if you are POOR you are the worst of the worst no matter what frigin color or nationality you are. These corrupt, me first, all for themselves politicians fill the council chambers with hot air while they argue about hot dog vendors. Do not be distracted. Don’t forget about who gave themselves huge raises, while everything else is going down the toilet.
