According to the Worcester Magazine Blog, at a press conference taking place now, councilor Rick Rushton is seeking a recount in Tuesdays Mayoral election.
Cites Problems with boxes…will be about 7000 dollars for a full hand recount. Until this morning, i was going the other way. At The End of the day we dont have a true count. the process is more important than myself or konnie…
Bad move Rick, bad move…

Here’s video of all but the last minute of his statement:

Note that these vote machines are made by Diebold, which lends a certain appeal to the idea of a recount, at least if you have a beef with Diebold (as I do).
Apart from the predictably ignorant “Diebold conspiracists”, whose ilk will be with us forever more since Al Gore lowered our elections to third-world status with his attempted Florida power grab, I assume that the entire municipal/state party apparatus that supported Rushton will come up with a bunch of “credible” reasons for the recount.
It’s all garbage, of course. But why shouldn’t the home of the world’s most expensive garbage bags not also have the world’s most pathetic garbagemen running the show?
FWIW, my beef with Diebold has to do with their proven track record of unethical behavior and their disinterest in real security, both of which tend to undermine people’s faith in the democratic system. They undermine my faith only slightly, but I don’t blame those who slide into full-blown conspiracy theories; I blame governments and Diebold for not holding themselves to a high standard.
If I’m rooting for anything in this case, it’s that the machines will be proven to have been 100% accurate. (If the machines are even slightly inaccurate, I hope the city will ask the vendor to bear the costs of both the recount and replacement machines.)
It beats hanging chads!
