Because knowing is half the battle

Obviously Americans should be up to speed on American foreign policy, right? So then why is it that the US gets a different Newsweek than the rest of the world?

This weeks US site.

This weeks site as the rest of the world will see it.
(notice the world covers in the sidebar)

The stories inside remain the same but it’s better this way, we wouldn’t want Americans to develop a complex. Or something like that.

Murray gets Globe Endorsement

Congratulations to Worcester Mayor Tim Murray for todays Boston Globe endorsement of his Lt Governor bid.

Murray’s best asset is his ability to see the connections among the state’s many challenges, including a sluggish economy, high-cost housing, shrinking population, and rising energy and healthcare costs. He promotes better commuter rail service as a way to tackle all of the problems at once. It’s a compelling argument laid out in a comprehensive campaign paper, “Putting Massachusetts Back on Track.” An expanded and efficient commuter rail service could help to link the jobs within the Route 128 belt with less expensive housing in the southern, western, and central portions of the state. Better commuter and freight rail service, he argues, is also an effective way to limit vehicle emissions and improve public health.

Hopefully that makes up for this god awful TV spot.

In other Murray news, Robert Z. Nemeth of the T&G also gave Tim his endorsement, but nobody cared.

Finding your way around the Woo

Nice overview of the cities ongoing wayfinding project in the T&G today, courtesy of Nick Kotsopoulos. The goal, in short, is to create a system of signage for visitors to get from point A to point B without getting lost in all the fluff in between. The plan has raised criticism from all corners of the city. Some cultural activists have shown concern with the decision to go with Arlington-based design firm Selbert Perkins Design Collaborative for the preliminary work instead of relying on local designers. Questions about the cost involved have just about every other conceivable activist ready to pounce on the notion that this is the best way we can spend our money. And of course, the East Siders are miffed that their neck of the woods is getting less attention than the West Side.

City councilors have also raised questions about what destination points would be identified by the signs and who will be determining which ones are identified. Mr. Clancy and District 2 Councilor Philip P. Palmieri complained about the paucity of attractions that have been identified so far in Worcester’s East Side compared to the West Side.

Sorry about that Phil, we thought you guys were sick of us uppity West Siders loitering in your watering holes and figured we would give you a break from all the attention. Is it just me or is there a little Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde going on here? Maybe if district 2 would provide the rest of us with a list of destinations worthy of our presence, we could avoid this petty crap.

Anyway, good read. As ridiculous a city Worcester can be to traverse, there is an easy fix; just remove any expectation that a visitor will navigate like a local and provide signage that gets you to grandmas house, over the river but without having to get through the woods.

CanalFest ‘06

Celebrating the Blackstone that was:
Blackstoneold

And introducing the Blackstone that could be:
Blackstonenew

…is obviously no easy task. But the CanalFest team did a great job pulling things together. What seemed like a solid turnout of a very diverse crowd, excellent food, ACTUAL WATER ON HARDING STREET (if only temporary) and a real healthy vibe from the visitors made for a great afternoon; and I admit, I’m just a little surprised. One thing that stood out and was both frustrating as all hell and fascinating at the same time; Worcesterites in general have no idea how to function in a crowd. Maybe it’s just been to long for many in the city, but I was only there 5 min before the first of many walked into me seeming overwhelmed and disoriented. People almost looked to be in shock at having a real crowd in an area many wrote off years ago. Well get used to it folks, I don’t think Fletcher and company will let this one die off easy. The whole city deserves a pat on the back for this one. Green Island has been the shit for years, it’s nice to see everyone else catching on.
