Home of the free, Land of the sheep
Slashdot just threw up a link to this page at the American Library Association. It’s their list of the top 100 books banned in the United States. To be on the list the books need to be chalanged in public institutions and not just private schools, churches, etc. To be honest the list made me a little sad, a fair number of books that made the cut were some of my favorite as a teen, and many still sit up front on my book shelves. Fortunately the best solution to literary censorship is the easiest, read more.
The included quote from author Judy Blume says it all; “[I]t’s not just the books under fire now that worry me. It is the books that will never be
written. The books that will never be read. And all due to the fear of censorship.
As always, young readers will be the real losers.”
